Broke the app is a great introduction to the struggle with poverty in the United States. In each 10 minute round of this poverty simulation, players choose a character and receive texts, emails and news bulletins pertinent to that character’s situation. Each response to a text or an email affects both the player’s bank balance as well as their community support. 

Download the free app on your Android or Apple phone by going to the Google Playstore or the Apple App Store. Search for Broke: the game, by Dana Gold. Click Install. Once it is installed, you will be prompted to OPEN the game on your phone. After you have installed and opened Broke, you can choose a character and begin to interact via email and text with your landlord, your sister, or your neighbor down the street. Make decisions and see if you can keep your bank balance in the green and your friends and family in your corner.
